Don’t we just love our sports women for being the firebrands they are? With some unbelievable titles and prestigious wins to their credit, these women have done us proud on several occasions. Here’s looking at who these powerful women are.

Sania Mirza
A list of the most celebrated sports women without our favourite Sania Mirza? So incomplete!  One of the most renowned players, Sania’s contribution to tennis remains unmatched. She was the first woman to have made it to the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament in the US Open in 2005. She added yet another feather to her cap when she was conferred the nation’s highest sports award, the Arjuna Award. The girl continues her reign the tennis scene and recently even won her maiden Women’s Doubles Grand Slam with Martina Hingis at the 2015 Wimbledon. Now if that’s not an enviable feat, we don’t know what is!

Dipika Pallikal
The first Indian squash player to break into the top 10 WSA ranking, Dipika Pallikal is a force to be reckoned with in the squash scene. In 2012, the player even received the prestigious Arjuna Award – something that gave her motivation to do even better at her game. The girl went on to win her sixth WSA title when she won the Meadwood Pharmacy Open in February 2013. Only of 23, Deepika is undoubtedly one of the best players we have in the country today.

Mary Kom
One who started playing boxing on an international level at the age of 18, MC Mary Kom has done us proud several times. No wonder then that Bollywood made a biopic on her victories and struggles throughout her boxing career. Addressed fondly as Magnificent Mary, she was the only Indian woman to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics where she won the bronze medal. It was in the Asian Games in 2014 in South Korea where she won our hearts yet again by winning a Gold Medal. Take a bow, girl!

Sonika Kaliraman
Standing tall at 6 feet, Sonika Kaliraman is one of the most renowned women wrestlers in India. Sonika, the daughter of former wrestler Chandgi Ram, was the only female wrestler to have represented India in the Asian Games in Doha in 2006. Talk about being a game changer!

Saina Nehwal
Currently No. 1 in the world by Badminton World Federation Women’s Singles 2015, Sania will always be one of the best badminton players of our country. After all, the girl is the first Indian to win a medal in badminton at the Olympics. In January 2009, she was conferred the Arjuna Award while in 2010, Saina was given the Padma Shri. Talk about being a performer!
