SS16 Trends: The Spring 2016 Catwalk Trend Pictures
Will you work mega-ruffles, embrace the 90s revival, or actually trial a princess tiara in the office? Introducing our new season fashion report, your guide to the hottest spring 2016 trends...

Slip On
Go on, ask us what SS16’s first key buy is? The slip dress is back and looking slinkier than ever – trimmed with scalloped lingerie lace at Celine, in 90s satin or see-thru chiffon at Saint Laurent, and layered over fine knits at Pucci. With underwear as outerwear as a lead concept, SS16 is looking pretty sexy already, we'd say.

Life’s A Picnic
...And in soft gingham dresses and loose blanket trousers, how could it not be? Victoria Beckham, Celine and Stella McCartney are all ordering us to check up before the season ahead, reinventing fashion’s favourite patterns in easy, breezy new silhouettes.

Vivid Colour
How many sweet and sour rainbow clashes can one designer work into a single look? The challenge was on as Christopher Kane, Gucci, Balmain and Dries Van Noten presented their Pantone hits in new graphic effects - think patchwork star-bursts from Kane and cool Trompe-l'œil at Gucci.

Ruffles
SS16's big romance played out at Michael Kors, Miu Miu, Roberto Cavalli and more, as ruffles became a key detail trend. Quantity and quality were both important here – take your cue from Mary Katrantzou’s more minimal, structured tiers, or go all out in a shredded Marques Almeida number.

Graphic Stripes
The majority of designers showed some kind of super stripe, but our top marks go to Missoni, Roksanda and Prada, who experimented with chopped, curled and scattered lines. For SS16, the stripe is oh so right.

Film Star Christian Dior’s soft focus led the dozens of tributes to sheer beauty, with almost half a collection dedicated to misty organzas and foamy chiffons. The trick to working this dreamy trend will be in the layering, building up opacity for a look that’s suitable for real life.

Mirror Me

High shine fabrics are always a spring/summer favourite, but for SS16 the incarnations are cooler and more experimental than ever before. JW Anderson embellished classic sweaters with broken mirror pieces, while Louis Vuitton went future-perfect with their ruched foil minidresses.

(Left to right: Loewe, Isabel Marant and Louis Vuitton spring 2016 fashion shows)

The 90s
From Saint Laurent to Vetments, the 1990s fashion scene was the most popular decade to mine for inspiration at the SS16 shows. Channel your inner Kate Moss by teaming your slip with wellies and an oversized jacket as at Saint Laurent, or take some sporty street styling tips from the Alexander Wang show. Even the tracksuit made a seriously chic comeback, with Edie Campbell modelling Chloe’s new velour number. We never thought we’d see the day.

The Backpack
The humble gap year rucksack has been given a haute makeover thanks to Burberry, who embroidered each model’s initials into their canvas and nylon wares. Elsewhere, Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim luxed up the traditional shape, while Rick Owens used, um, other humans in his demonstration of piggy backs.

Tiara Time
Move over Duchess Kate, the tiara’s taken on a cool new runway-ready guise. No look at Saint Laurent or Miu Miu was complete without its crowning glory. Maybe an ornate headband would be a more office-appropriate nod to the trend, but come festival season, we’ll all be finding our inner urban princess.

All These Little Things
It's time to flaunt every jewel in your box. Let the layering commence, as Gucci declares that more is more when it comes to accessorising for the spring 2016 fashion season. The berets, the brooches, the Deirdre Barlow specs... pile them high and get yourself down to Abigail's Party, stat.

In Chains
The classic chunky chain gets a cool-over for spring, re-imagined in wavy chokers at JW Anderson, or scrunched into heavy clutch handles at Marni.

Graphic Bags

Leather stripes and bold prints ruled at Dolce and Gabbana, Stella McCartney and more, while Kenzo took the trend even more literally, showing clusters of basic shape pouches in a single look.

Extra Long Earrings
Shoulder-grazing lengths are the objects to desire, preferably in a mismatched pair a la Celine or JW Anderson. This is one of the easiest style updates to try at home for the new season - simply buy two new pairs of earrings to clash, or cherry-pick old favourites from your existing jewellery box.

Haute Slippers
Get yourself a new pair of cool mules, pronto. Acne's woven checkerboards and Balenciaga's cream lace slides are some of the hottest flats of the season, and super-comfortable to boot. Let's thank our lucky fashion stars in advance for that one, shall we?

THE LATEST FASHION TRENDS FOR 2016
BY ROMA SINGH
You can find the latest trend report for fall and winter 2015 here.
Spring is almost here so high time for our seasonly trends report!
Get ready for a relaxed 70s vibe with soft flowery fabrics, suede and mildly swirling pants. Or go the complete opposite direction with more tailored looks that embrace the waist or play with asymmetrical lines.
There is something for everyone this spring. Here are some of the best and most wearable trends for women over 40 to embrace this season!

1. Bring on the blues

BLUES
Blue is making a comeback. There was plenty of denim but blue was also present in flowing dresses, skirts and jackets. The blue trend was a very noticeable streetstyle trend during the recent fashion weeks. I would not say it replaces black (since black and white was very strong as usual) but blue will be a great alternative for black this season. It is usually a much better color to wear for most women than the harsher black. Check out this article for blues inspiration.

2. Be squared

squares
Gingham was particularly strong but designers have been very creative in creating all kinds of other squared looks. Who knew that they look so good with flowers as well?

3. 70s vibe

BOHEMIANCHIC
The 70s were a big theme for spring. Lots of bohemian chic looks featuring flowery patterns, fringes and tassels, bell sleeves and flared trousers.

4. The fluid fit

fluidfit
Those who like comfort will love the fluid fit trend. Clothes are not oversized but are bigger than tailored looks. So don’t be afraid to add a little slouch to your tops, pants and dresses! Be mindful of creating a good overall silhouette though.

5. Midi skirts

MIDISKIRTS
Not everyone’s favorite trend but skirts were mostly long on the runway. Midi skirts can work really well so long as you pay attention to proportion. Often you will want a higher fitted top with this look. It also works well if you opt for an asymmetrical hemline.

6. Big bold florals

BOLDFLOWERS
Bold prints make a statement and they are especially good for hot summer nights. I love wearing (bolder) prints on skirts. You still get the fabulous print without overwhelming you too much since you can combine it with a plain white shirt on top.

7. Belted!

BELTED
Belts were used to give the more fluid clothes more structure and a waist definition. Karate and obi belts were used but also simple rope type belts.

8. Shirt dresses

shirtdressesspring2015trend
Shirt dresses are both casual and chic and since many come with sleeves, will be so easy to wear!

9. All over white

ALLOVERWHITE
Not for everyone, but I love the all-over white look. It feels so fresh and modern to me. You don’t have to stick to the same color white either. Feel free to play with combinations of cream and off white and have fun layering!

10. Asymmetry and vertical lines

asymmetry
Asymmetry is still strong and I have included it in this lineup again since I feel it’s such a flattering look for women over 40. It creates great vertical lines and adds more interest to an outfit.

11. Wide cropped pants

croppedpants
Another trend where creating the right balance within your outfit is of utmost importance. That often means shorter jackets and tops or combine with a long vest as shown at the top left.

12. Flats!

flatshoetrendspring2015
Many of you will be happy to know that flat shoes are making a comeback as many designers showed them on the runway. Other shoe trends include gladiators, solid block heels, mules, and booties continue to be strong too.

Other trends include:

  • All-over denim
  • Polo style shirts
  • Green military jackets
  • Sporty luxe
  • Black and white
  • Stripes
  • Wearing skirts over pants.
As you can see, there is something for everyone this year. The key is to pick those trends that speak to you and mix them with your own unique style.
I always think it’s a good idea to get at least a few trendy items each season, as it keeps your style current, young and fresh. One or two items can already add a new spark to your closet.
I will revisit most of these trends in the coming months to show you how to wear them and what to buy.
For a complete overview of all my favorite looks from the runways check my spring and summer 2015 trends board.
